Aim of the course

The Aim of the Fixed appliance course is to provide information on scope and limitations of fixed orthodontic appliances

Course Contents

• Components of fixed orthodontic appliances • Pre-adjusted fixed orthodontic appliances • Tip-edge appliance, synergy system, and self-ligating brackets • Archwires and Auxillieries • Leveling and aligning • Space closure • Torque • Finishing and setting phase • Occurrence of nickel allergy • Arch form • Banding in contemporary orthodontic practice • Orthodontic bonding and the basic mechanism of bonding teeth, bonding materials.

a) Knowledge and understanding

a.1. Describe the design, manufacture and construction of fixed orthodontic appliances a.2. Describe the various types of fixed orthodontic appliances a.3. Discuss the types of pre-adjusted edgewise appliances and prescriptions a.4. Identify other appliance systems including Tip- Edge and self-ligating bracket systems a.5. Describe intra-oral auxiliaries, temporary anchorage devices

b.1. Integrate orthodontics with other dental and non-dental professions

c) Professional and Practical Skills

c.1. Select, fits and manages fixed appliance systems appropriate to the treatment of specific malocclusions c.2. Interpret the literature with regard to bracket c.3. Identify the appropriateness of fixed appliances for the treatment of specific malocclusions

d) General and transferable skills

c.1. Select, fits and manages fixed appliance systems appropriate to the treatment of specific malocclusions c.2. Interpret the literature with regard to bracket c.3. Identify the appropriateness of fixed appliances for the treatment of specific malocclusions
