Aim of the course
To enable the postgraduate student to:
1-Be in line with updates in oral biology.
2-Supply broad background about histology and physiology of dental and oral tissues.
3-Act as a base for understanding the related clinical courses.
4-Allow the development and application of appropriate professional attitude as well as communication and practical skills of the students.
Course Contents
• Tooth development.
• Enamel structure.
• Dentin structure.
• Pulp structure and function.
• Cementum structure and cementogenesis.
• Periodontal ligament (development, structure & function).
• Bone, alveolar process & bone remodeling.
a) Knowledge and understanding
a.1. Recognize odontogenesis and formation of dento-alveolar complex.
a.2. Identify hard and soft dental tissues, as well as some oral structures.
a.3. Differentiate the histological structure and function of different hard and soft dental tissues, and some oral structures.
a.4. Characterize the histological age changes of different hard and soft dental tissues, as well as important oral tissues.
b) Intellectual Skills
b.1. Predict the different stages of tooth development.
b.2. Differentiate between the histological structure of different dental and oral tissues.
b.3. Explain the clinical significance associated with certain hard and soft dental structures, as well as some oral tissues.
b.4. Correlate between each tissue and its clinical considerations.
b.5. Distinguish any histological age changes or abnormalities that might affect normal dental and oral tissues.
c) Professional and Practical Skills
c.1. Interpret the normal histology of different dental and oral tissues.
c.2. Identify the electron microscopic features of dental and oral tissues.
c.3. Draw the histological structure of hard and soft dental tissues, as well as oral structures.
