Aim of the course

The aim of this course is designed to supply students with knowledge related to organization of dental care as well as upgrade their knowledge and practice in the use of dental indices in calibration of dental diseases

Course Contents

• Introduction to Epidemiology • Basic measurements in Epidemiology • Epidemiologic methods and sampling • Uses of Epidemiology • Surveying • Epidemiology of dental caries • Dental caries indices • Caries risk assessment • Caries activity tests • Epidemiology of periodontal diseases • Periodontal indices • Periodontal risk assessment • Oral health programs • Dental health education • Needs and demands • Organization of dental care • Group practice and teamwork

a) Knowledge and understanding

a1- Identify factors affecting dental needs and demands a2- Realize the importance of organization of dental care a3- Identify the concept of group practice and team work a4- Enumerate duties of dental auxiliaries a5- Describe indices used for assessment of dental caries and periodontal diseases a6- Comprehend factors affecting epidemiology of dental caries and periodontal diseases a7-Identify caries and periodontal risk assessment methods a8-Describe caries activity tests

b) Intellectual Skills

b1-Identify individuals at high risk to dental diseases b2- Select the appropriate type of study &sample size for an epidemiologic investigation b3- Select the appropriate index & examination protocol for measuring dental disease in individuals & communities b4-Analysis and evaluation of measures of disease frequency as well as the association between risk factors and disease and directing these data towards proper planning of oral health programs b5-Identify dental health education

c) Professional and Practical Skills

c1- Detect & quantify dental diseases using different indices c2- Design epidemiological studies to address research questions in clinical & public health dentistry c3-Apply statistical knowledge on different medical programs
