Aim of the course

To enable the postgraduate student to: 1. To correlate the histopathological, radiographic, and clinical picture of different developmental alterations of the oral and maxillo- facial region, and common odontogenic pathologies. 2. To highlight the difference between hereditary and acquired diseases. 3. To recognize etiological factors behind common odontogenic conditions of the oral and para-oral regions.

Course Contents

Developmental disturbances affecting the number and size of teeth. Developmental disturbances affecting the shape, structure of teeth and eruption disorders. Dental caries Etiology, role of bacteria, CHO and saliva. Pathology of dental caries. Pulp diseases. Etiology and classification. Focal reversible pulpitis Acute and chronic pulpitis. Pulp necrosis and Calcification Diseases of periapical area Dental granuloma, abscess, alveolar osteitis. Osteomyelitis (acute and chronic). Odontogenic cysts. Classification, inflammatory odontogenic cysts. Developmental odontogenic cysts Soft tissue cysts Odontogenic tumors. Classification, epithelial odontogenic tumors. Mesenchymal and mixed odontogenic tumors Developmental disturbances soft tissue Common Infections of the oral cavity

a) Knowledge and understanding

1.a Define common developmental and odontogenic disorders. 2.a Recognize the etiology and pathogenesis contributing to oral and para-oral disorders. 3.a Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of inflammatory and non-inflammatory odontogenic diseases. 4.a Understand the mechanisms of responses to insults including trauma and infection that cause developmental and non-developmental and odontogenic disorders 5.a Identify the pathogenesis of genetic and immunologic and infectious diseases which are particularly relevant to the practice of dentistry.

1.b Correlate different modes of inheritance to the expression of the anomaly 2.b Distinguish between hereditary and acquired diseases 3.b Relate etiological factors behind common odontogenic conditions of the oral and para-oral regions.

1.c Diagnose different dental and oral pathological conditions, depending on clinical, radiographic and microscopic features. 2.c Build a differential diagnosis list of different odontogenic lesions, depending on their characteristic clinical, radiographic and histopathological features.
